Exciting News!

In the coming months we are going to sit down with key leaders in the consulting industry, to ask them how consultants can add more value in the world.

The first interview is with Allan Gattenby, Director of Programs, Association of Career Professionals International (ACPI) Australia, which has already taken place and will be published shortly.

Navigate to www.letsfixconsulting.com and click "follow" to make sure you receive the interviews

And in the spirit of making this a collaborative exercise, we'd like your input on who to talk to and what to ask them.

We ask the ten questions below (your feedback welcome)

  1. What is your definition of a consultant?
  2. How/where do you fit into the consulting industry?
  3. What attracted you to consulting?
  4. How long have you been a consultant?
  5. What is the value that consultants add in your association/profession?
  6. What are the characteristics of successful consultants in your opinion?
  7. What stops consultants from adding value in your association/profession (systemic)?
  8. What do some consultants do to give the profession a bad name?
  9. If you could fix anything about consulting what would it be?
  10. How would you fix it?

Is there anyone prominent in the consulting industry you'd like to hear answer these questions?

Let us know and we'll do our best to pin them down!

  • 1) What is your definition of a consultant? – someone who advises with perspective

    2) How/where do you fit into the consulting industry? – I fit it to my needs.

    3) What attracted you to consulting? – it’s a job, innit?

    4) How long have you been a consultant? – several years

    5) What is the value that consultants add in your association/profession?
    - that depends on who they are. Some add lots, others don’t. The dividing line is their ability to think outside the box – and apply it to specific problems.

    6) What are the characteristics of successful consultants in your opinion? – the ability to be listened to when presenting the answers the boss doesn’t want to hear.

    7) What stops consultants from adding value in your association/profession (systemic)? – reading answers from a book they’ve read, and bosses wanting that sort of sloppy work.

    8) What do some consultants do to give the profession a bad name? – giving the boss the answer he wants. (It’s usually a “he” by the way).

    9) If you could fix anything about consulting what would it be? – make sure that all consultants MUST supply a piece of bad news. That will ensure that they are genuine and have the courage of their own convictions.

    10) How would you fix it? – how can you fix a broken industry? And one that’s encouraged to be broken by the very people hiring consultants? No: I find those people who value honesty and integrity and help them – what’s the point in re-inventing the wheel? The answers have been there since the time of Solomon, and are still ignored.
